Literature Text

L Lawliet led a very difficult childhood, even when his parents were there to support him.

Mr Lawliet repaired bicycles for a living, earning just enough to provide for the family. As for Mrs Lawliet, she was too sick to work, so now her ' full-time job' was looking after L.

The neighbouring families were of no help. All of them looked down on the Lawliets because they were poor. So the neighbours' children were told not to talk to the lawliet boy with a black messy shock as hair.

His name had caused all the trouble. Because L sounded like ' Elle' , so the neighbours just thought that Mr and Mrs Lawliet were illiterate and gave their boy a girl's name.

Because of that, L stayed home all the time. He learnt from books that were dumped to the Lawliets, because the neighbours' children were never interested in reading them. And Mr and Mrs Lawliet obviously could not afford them.

In the neighbourhood, the Lawliet house was treated like a rubbish dump, so whatever the neighbours did not want all landed there.

L learnt fast. His unblinking grey eyes never left a book and soon his vocabulary was the same, or even beyond Mrs Lawliet's. And he was only seven now.

However, L did not attend school at all. Mr and Mrs Lawliet could not afford it and L was ridiculed even more.

So L could only learn from the neighbours' unwanted books. At home, his feet were always perched up on a chair because he felt that the floor was dirty. They only touched the floor when neccesary. He often sat there for hours and Mrs Lawliet always wondered how he managed to stay there so long without foot cramps.

Despite their difficulties, Mr and Mrs Lawliet were quite happy with L. He seemed to understand their plight very well and he was a bright child.

The only trouble faced with L was that he never ate his vegetables. He only liked to eat the sugar cubes that Mr Lawliet put in his tea before going to work.

Occasionally, when Mr Lawliet found cake in the dumps, he would give it to L. L's face always brightened up at the prospect of cake without fail. The same thing happened with strawberries as well.

When Halloween came, L at seven years old did not know whether he should be happy or not. He should be happy. After all, birthdays come only once a year. The Lawliets could not afford a birthday cake for him, so Mrs Lawliet gave him twice the usual amount of his sugar cubes during breakfast.

But L hated it as well. Due to the massive amount of pumpkin carving that took place there, the pumpkin pulp always ended up with the Lawliets. Then Mrs lawliet would try to force the orange stuff down his throat. L would already grimace even at the sight of pumpkin.

Life went on, as always. L would never had guessed that his life was going to change drastically a year later...
